Care

Each placemat is a round of 3 mm clear cast acrylic with the artwork printed on the underside, beneath the clear top. The print itself never touches the plate or the cutlery, so care is mostly about keeping the top clear and glossy.

Everyday cleaning

Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and a drop of dish soap, then pat dry. Never dust it with a dry cloth: grit and crumbs have nothing to glide on and can leave fine scratches across the gloss. Hand wash only.

What to avoid

  • The dishwasher. Heat and harsh detergent can warp or dull acrylic in general, so keep the mats out of it.
  • Scouring pads, abrasive sponges and powder cleansers. They scratch the top.
  • Ammonia and glass cleaner. Most glass and household sprays contain ammonia, which can cloud acrylic or leave fine cracks (known as crazing).
  • Acetone, including nail polish remover, for the same reason.

Heat

Use a trivet under anything straight from the oven, stove or microwave, such as pans, baking dishes and microwaved bowls.

Scratches

Knives and forks never reach the print, which sits under 3 mm of acrylic. The clear top can take fine marks over time from sliding plates, grit or scouring pads, so lift plates rather than slide them, and wipe with a soft cloth.

Storage

Store the mats flat, in a stack, with a soft cloth or a sheet of paper between each one. Keep them out of strong, direct sun when they are not on the table, and keep them clear of anything sharp in the drawer.
