Every Eleonora Miami placemat is a round of 3 mm acrylic, 38 cm (15 in) across. This page covers how that size works with your plates and your table, and which set to choose.
The mat and the plate
Most dinner plates measure 26–28 cm (10¼–11 in). On a 38 cm mat, that leaves a ring of print about 5–6 cm (2–2⅜ in) wide all the way around the plate, which is the point: the print still shows once the table is set.
- Dinner plate, 27–28 cm (10½–11 in): about 5 cm (2 in) of print shows around it.
- Smaller dinner or lunch plate, 23–26 cm (9–10¼ in): about 6–7.5 cm (2⅜–3 in) shows.
- Charger, 30–33 cm (12–13 in): a slim ring of about 2.5–4 cm (1–1½ in) shows, enough to frame the stack.
Cutlery can sit on the edge of the mat or on the table just beside it. Both look right; on a smaller table, keeping it on the mat saves space.
Round tables
On a round table, set each mat about 2.5 cm (1 in) in from the edge. Round mats run out of room toward the middle of the table before they run out of edge, so the counts below are checked two ways: the mats must not overlap at that position, and each place should get roughly 60 cm (24 in) of table edge. All counts are approximate.
| Round table | Mats that fit comfortably | Sets to choose |
|---|---|---|
| 91 cm (36 in) | 2 or 3 (4 only just fit, pushed right to the edge and touching) | Set of 2, or a set of 4 for a snug table |
| 107 cm (42 in) | 4 | Set of 4 |
| 122 cm (48 in) | 4 or 5 (6 fit with about 1 cm between mats) | Set of 4, or set of 6 for a full table |
| 137 cm (54 in) | 6 | Set of 6 |
| 152 cm (60 in) | 6 to 8 | Set of 6, or set of 6 and set of 2 for eight |
| 183 cm (72 in) | 8 or 9 (10 at a squeeze) | Two sets of 4, or set of 6 and set of 4 for ten |
Round mats on a round table repeat the shape of the table, which keeps a crowded setting looking calm. Leave the middle clear for a low vase, a bread board or a shared dish.
Rectangular and oval tables
On a long table, allow about 60 cm (24 in) per person along each side. With a 38 cm mat, that leaves roughly 22 cm (9 in) between mats, enough room for glasses and a shared dish. As a guide:
- 150 cm (60 in) table: about 2 a side, so a set of 4.
- 180 cm (72 in) table: about 3 a side, so a set of 6, or 2 a side plus one at each end.
- 240 cm (96 in) table: about 4 a side, so a set of 6 and a set of 2, or two sets of 4.
Round mats soften the corners of a long table and leave more of the wood or cloth showing than rectangular ones do. Line them up at the same distance from the edge and they will look tidy without measuring every place.
Which set to choose
- Set of 2 ($112): a table for two, a breakfast nook, or a second print to mix into a bigger table.
- Set of 4 ($216): most round tables of 107–122 cm (42–48 in) and long tables up to about 150 cm (60 in).
- Set of 6 ($306): a 137–152 cm (54–60 in) round table, or a 180 cm (72 in) long table.
All the mats in a set are the same print. For a larger table, or a table with two prints, combine sets: a set of 4 and a set of 2 gives six places in two prints.
